Tingsha & Bells

Sacred Chimes for Meditation and Ritual

Tingshas are small, hand-cast cymbals connected by a leather cord — traditionally used in Tibetan Buddhist rituals to mark the beginning and end of meditation sessions. When struck together, they produce a clear, high-pitched ring that can sustain for 15-30 seconds. Our tingshas are cast in Patan using the lost-wax method from the same 7-metal alloy as traditional singing bowls. We also source dorje bells, ghanta (hand bells), meditation gongs, and wind chimes — all handcrafted by Kathmandu metalworkers.

How It's Made

Understanding the production process helps you appreciate the craftsmanship and communicate the product story to your customers.

Tingshas are made using the lost-wax casting method. The artisan carves a model in beeswax, creates a clay mold around it, melts out the wax, and pours molten metal into the void. After cooling, the clay mold is broken away to reveal the cast tinghsa. Pairs are then tuned to match each other — when struck, both cymbals should produce the same fundamental note. The surfaces are hand-polished and embossed with Buddhist symbols such as the Eight Auspicious Symbols, Om Mani Padme Hum mantra, or dragon motifs.

Tingsha & Bells — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between tingshas and finger cymbals?
Tingshas are specifically designed for meditation and ritual use — they are thicker, heavier, and tuned to produce a sustained, resonant ring. Finger cymbals (zills) used in belly dancing are thinner, lighter, and produce a shorter, brighter sound. Our tingshas are cast from the same alloy as singing bowls, giving them a warmer, more complex tone.
How do I use tingshas in meditation?
Hold one tingsha by the cord and let the other hang freely. Bring them together with a gentle, glancing strike. The clear ring signals the start or end of a meditation session. They can also be used to clear energy in a room (space clearing), to bring attention back during guided meditation, or as a timer — striking at regular intervals.
