Hand-Hammered Singing Bowls

Ancient Sound, Handcrafted in Kathmandu

Our hand-hammered singing bowls are crafted using techniques passed down through generations of metalworkers in Kathmandu Valley's Patan district. Each bowl is shaped from a flat metal disc through 2,000-5,000 individual hammer strikes by a team of 3-5 smiths working in coordinated rhythm. The traditional 7-metal alloy — gold, silver, mercury, copper, iron, tin, and zinc — produces rich, complex overtones prized by meditation practitioners, sound healers, and yoga studios worldwide. Every bowl is unique, with slight variations in thickness that create the layered harmonic signature impossible to replicate by machine.

How It's Made

Understanding the production process helps you appreciate the craftsmanship and communicate the product story to your customers.

The alloy is melted in clay crucibles at over 1,000 degrees Celsius and poured into flat disc molds. Once cooled, the disc is reheated and a team of smiths hammers it into shape — each bowl requires 2,000-5,000 strikes across multiple heating cycles. The interior is smoothed on a foot-powered lathe. The master craftsman tests each bowl's fundamental tone and overtones, applying targeted strikes to fine-tune the pitch. Bowls are finished with either a raw hammered patina or polished smooth. Some receive hand-engraved Buddhist mantras.

Hand-Hammered Singing Bowls — Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if a bowl is genuinely hand-hammered?
Genuine hand-hammered bowls show visible hammer marks on the surface — small, overlapping indentations that create a textured finish. The wall thickness varies slightly throughout the bowl (detectable by touch and sound). Machine-made bowls have perfectly uniform walls and smooth surfaces. When struck, hand-hammered bowls produce complex, layered overtones, while machine bowls produce a simpler, single-tone ring.
What notes do the bowls produce?
The fundamental tone depends on size, thickness, and alloy. Small bowls (6-8 inch) typically produce notes in the F-B range (upper chakras). Medium bowls (8-10 inch) produce D-G notes (heart to throat chakra). Large bowls (10+ inch) produce C-E notes (root to solar plexus). We can select bowls for specific notes on request, or provide chakra-matched sets of 7 bowls.
Are the bowls safe? Do they contain lead?
Traditional 7-metal alloy includes a trace amount of lead (less than 2% of total alloy). For health-conscious markets, we offer lead-free bowls made from a copper-tin-zinc alloy that produces similar tonal quality. All bowls are food-safe when used as decorative pieces. We provide metal composition certificates on request.
What striker should I use?
Each bowl comes with a wooden striker (for striking) and a suede-wrapped mallet (for rimming/singing). Smaller bowls respond best to lighter, thinner strikers. Larger bowls need heavier mallets. The suede wrapping provides friction for the singing technique — rubbing the mallet around the rim to produce a sustained, humming tone.
